Book Review: The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies
The book title tells it all, but there’s so much more to crafting a story, and Alison Goodman writes with flair, humor, and an excellent feel for the Regency era. Lady Augusta and Lady Julia, the two older “ladies,” are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Julia is weak from illness and would rather follow society’s rules. Gus loves to bend those rules to right society’s wrongs. Between the two of them, chaos and adventure flourish.
The story is filled with wonderful details of the countryside, fashion, the horrible odors of the time, and the witty repartee among the various characters. The character leads are drawn with respect and insight. I loved the fact that the writing style employs many of the terms from that era (I used the dictionary frequently). And there is never a dull moment from one chapter to the next.
If you love historical tales from Regency times, I highly recommend this one. You won’t be disappointed.
